Information found on various forums and internet sites

The following information is some of what I have found on the topic on the internet, mostly from various forums. Unfortunately, what I have found so far is not very informative. While there are various theories around I have yet to find any conclusive answer as to why these strands appear! If you have any more information I would love to hear from you :)

Some fellow 'sufferers' have discussed the matter on Yahoo Answers and other online forums:

I was searching allover for google to find out what this was! Thank god for this site.
I noticed 1 in my hair about a week ago. Then yesterday more :/ I keep cutting them out.
I dont want to seeing as its taken me ages to grow my hair healthy.

I looked on a forum and its maybe to do with an underactive thyroid someone said. Bingo! I thought i had an underactive thyroid because i have all the other symtoms.

I keep finding these...it's almost 50% of my hair now and it's been over a 6 month period...if anyone knows how to help these from growing, I would love to know...I am pulling them out and scared of getting bald spots! I want my old hair back!!!

I've had all of the symptoms of underactive thyroid as well and they keep saying my levels are normal...so frustrating! Maybe natural thyroid supplements...kelp?

They are terminal hairs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminal_hair

I have these weird wiry strands on the bottom (nape) of my head. I've had it since I was in 8th grade and now am 25. I'm not sure for you, but I think mine are from hair bands (elastic, even the ones without the metal band...). My hypothesis is when I wrap the hair tie once, the act of wrapping damages the bottom of my hair. I've been using scrunchies and fabric hair ties for three years, but because I refuse to cut my hair short, they will never go away I suppose...

Message to original Post blogger: Did you find out what was causing this problem?

Thank you for these links! I've read all the posts and the story is always the same. Nice to know that I'm not the only one. I've heard about Trichotillomania, but could never get a straight answer from any literature identifying this type of wiry/kinky/coarse/pub-like hair.

I started having it when I was in 7th grade. My mom noticed I developed a bald spot on my head after pulling out these variant hairs. After that I stopped doing it, realizing the consequences (I hadn't even realized I pulled that much out).

Later on I found myself doing it on occasion when I was stressed out. I didn't do it nearly as often, but would often worry about how the back of my head would look and would check with a mirror from time to time.

Currently I'm simply cutting off parts of those hairs so they don't seem so apparent and so I don't damage the hair follicle entirely. Reading that many others have done this too makes me realize that cutting individual hairs may not be the solution either.

Part of me just wants to know why I have these hairs and what I can do to live with it or even fix it. Someone in one of the links mentioned after growing it out that it would eventually get smooth after being on a paleo diet.

I started a low carb diet a few months ago and I wonder if going full paleo would help.

Thanks again for this resource. We still don't know why we have these hairs or why we can't stop pulling them out, but it helps to know you're not alone.

I also have random hair strands like this in my canopy layer. Becuase of this I thought maybe its cos of the weather and I only started noticing my hair was like this when I moved to a really cold city. But I don't think its just cos of the weather.. because most other peoples' hair doesn't seem to get affected by the cold. Anyway I pull them out and cut them off. I look after my hair alot more now by using treatments, morrocan oil, etc. Hair is better but the strands are still kinky. Would really like to know why they're like that and what can be done to stop it from becoming so kinky and wiry! I'm pretty sure my hair wasn't always like this!

I have had this problem for at least 8 years! It started with a few strands. I even collected some of them and took them to a dermatologists in a lil baggy to show them, and this was very early on. But since I was African American he said just to not put chemicals in my hair anymore. Well I scalped part of my head to see what would happened. WEll in fact it did grow the same crinkly little hairs. This sent me on a mission to find what was happening to my hair. I went to several dermatologists, had my thryroid checked, blook work for Lupus, changed my diet, hair products, took vitamins, worked out, drank water, had cortisone injections, and had a biopsy done on my scalp. Still no answers. The biopsy showed I been pulling my hair. Of course! I wanted the hairs out!
I calmed down with just accepting it and wearing wigs for all these years, while my hair underneath totally turned into short wirey, very crinkly, hard, dark little pubic like hairs all over my head! My hair was a mess I was ashamed. I could not straighten them with a curling iron and relaxer would not take anymore.
I come on the computer from time to time to see if I can find some information of some kind of treatment that could reverse this condition and restore my natural hair.
I really dislike that this has happened and I don't know how to tell or show a guy that I have short and almost non existent little hard public like hair under my beautiful wigs. :(

I have the same problem as you guys! I have thick strands along with my reg thing strands of hair. I thought at first that it was perhaps because when I was younger I used to perm my hair and this was the cause for that, but I guess not? Also I suffer from Hyperthyroidism, and I been reading some people may have thyroid issues who have this problem too, so who knows if thyroid can play a role on this as well. I have also plucked them in the past when I noticed them, since i felt weierded out but now I just let them be. I don't notice them much since they are mixed in with my regular hair. I am glad to know I am not alone outthere. If this is the way I was meant to be, then let it be! :)

I've been researching this for a while. Lately I've become obsessed with my hair (the best solution would probably be just not to care but too late for that). I feel like I've followed every hair care tip out there but nothing can make my hair nicer because it's natural state is crinkly, wiry and gross. No amount of leave in conditioner and oil seems to do anything. But so far in all my research these are what I've found to be the possbile causes of these annoying abnormal hairs:

1. Hormonal imbalance/diet imbalance/health problem
2. Natural change in hair texture (although I'm in denial about this one)
3. Scab hair - damaged hair follicle
4. Hard water - mineral deposits on scalp (this can be cause/make scalp hair worse supposedly).

Hi everyone. This is a hormone-based syndrome called "aquired progressive kinking of hair" (APKH).

It is caused due to the strand's sensitivity to DHT exposure. No treatment for what I know seems to be available.

All those "dry hair recovery treatments" or "afro hair smoothing products" you will find online will NOT work. That would be exactly like giving your pubic hair a treatment in order to make it look sleek and beautiful. That wont work!

i too have the same problem . And I am only 22 . This thing started when i was just 18 yrs old but very few wiry hairs. But as time passed , these type of hairs multiplied and I hate this. I keep pulling my hairs . Please share the solution to it.

I have some of these on my head too, I don't find them often but they are always kinky looking and feel rough when I run my fingers over them. I know vitamin c deficiency will cause body hair to corkscrew, and it causes ingrown hairs on the legs and such. So my theory is a possible vitamin c deficiency because the hair does seem to be a stretched out inconsistent corkscrew, like it's been twisted. It does seem strange that it doesn't affect all the hairs but perhaps its also damage to that particular follicle.
